The local football team is Carrarese. It currently plays in Serie C2 after several championships in Serie C1 and a season in Serie B. Carrarese won the Serie C cup in 1983. It plays its home games in the Marmi stadium.
Volleyball and basketball are popular local sports too: Virtus Carrarese (volleyball) plays in Serie C, while Spintermar Carrara (basketball) recently fell to Serie C after a long campaign in Serie B2.
The local table tennis team, Apuania Carrara, is currently in Serie B1 and looking good for promotion to Serie A.
In cycling, Carrara last hosted a stage in the Giro in 1960. It was divided into two half-stages, with the first won by Belgian cyclist Emil Daems and the second, a time trial through the local quarries, by Jacques Anquetil.
Carrara is also home to Italy’s first national champions of korfball. The title was won in 2005.
Many sporting figures of past and present are natives of Carrara, including Gianluigi BuffonGiorgio ChinagliaAndrea Raggi and Luca Pastine (football), Francesco Secchiari (cycling), Maurizia Cacciatori (volleyball), and the Chieffi brothers (sailing).
